Google Mobile Algorithm Hits This Week

This week, April 21, 2015, Google will be launching what will be a devastating algorithm as many webmasters have not properly set their websites for mobile users. Whether you like it our not the numbers don’t lie. In fact, most of your traffic today will come from a mobile phone, so that means UX/UI is about to change! For over the last six years, there have been many blog post about the future of mobile and frustration among users who try to navigate mobile and have a terrible time doing it.However, this time Google has finally implemented the algorithm to crack down on webmaster’s that create websites without thinking of users.

How To Prepare For Google Mobile Algorithm

Okay, so what can you do to prepare for this algorithm? There are few things you need to look at if you don’t already:

These two are the most popular, there others like the Barebones WordPress Responsive Template. This is a really stripped down version of WordPress and you can just build your own WordPress page template and then custom design the CSS code you the way you want. However, the best thing you can do if you can’t create a mobile site in time! These are open-source tools that you can use and they are FREE!

How To Test Your Website With Google

The good news is you can test out your website and what it looks like with Google Mobile Website Tester. This tool will analyze your domain and determine if it meets Google’s standard. If it doesn’t it will just tell you the page you tested, however, we are sure there are multiple pages that don’t render or parse well for mobile. Go to your Google Webmaster Tools account (if you don’t have by now the do it now!), and you can navigate the mobile section and it will tell you all the pages that need to be updated. Please don’t take this lightly, fix this asap, because the site will be dropped from the index if it doesn’t meet min standard!

Common Problem View Port Meta Tag Fix

One of the things we’ve discovered with a few our domains was the improper use of this tag (meta name=viewport), the viewport tag. In some of my sites I actually had this set to (meta name=viewport content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0). Google had many of our websites failing for some reason; however, we made the changes to fix the problem and found the correct syntax was (meta name=viewport content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1). Something this stupid can cause issues with your rankings, so get out there and double check your responsive templates for markup errors.

Where To Go From Here

It’s pretty simple, you should be writing a content algorithm and story board for your users. This is an ongoing white hat seo strategy, that pays real dividends if you organize your content and navigation for users to get there. It also means you’d better be spending time creating the call-to-actions to keep a user engaged in your material. As you might of guessed, this becomes a full-time job or obsessive job and you’ll need help to keep it all together. Other than that, there’s nothing you really need to do. Just know that you’ll need a dynamic system to update all your websites if you have many of them. Think of an advanced template system to update your responsive design as much as you can!
